While you go on vacation as often as possible, thieves don’t. Here are a few tips to reduce the odds that you will be the victim of vandalism or theft while away.
Don’t tell everyone you know you’re going on vacation. Thieves target homes where the owners are on vacation, so tell only a few select people you won’t be home. This may include neighbors you trust to keep an eye on your home and pick up your mail/newspaper, and the local police who will patrol periodically in your neighborhood. Of course you will want to tell immediate family in case of an emergency, but don’t tell all of your friends on Facebook, your co-workers, and everyone in the world! The fewer people who know, the better.
Beef up security. Don’t leave keys outdoors in a “hidden” spot that you may otherwise leave outside for family members, and lock every door and window in your home. Set the alarms, notify the security company that you will be away, and be sure to display signs that alert potential thieves to the fact that your home is protected.
Make it appear that someone is home. Neighbors can change the position of window blinds, turn lights on and off at regular intervals, etc. Considering today’s ever-increasing technology, you can also operate the television, radio, lights, and other things that will give the appearance you are home remotely or by setting up timers.
If you have valuables such as jewelry or a substantial amount of cash, lock them up in a safe or in a lock box at the bank. Never leave valuable or sentimental items out in plain view while you’re away.
Burglarizing homes is becoming tougher for thieves thanks to today’s technology, but do everything you can to ensure that when you return home from vacation, your Dallas area home is in the same condition you left it.
