Taste Specific Decor

All homeowners have their own particular tastes in decorating, but just because you love wood paneling and red carpeting doesn’t mean a potential buyer will. Those in the market to buy a home want to be able to picture themselves living in your home, which is difficult if the decor is a bit strong. Consider painting the walls a neutral color and clearing decorative pieces to a minimum.

Half-finished DIY Projects

Did you begin building a deck, get it 90% complete, and then stop before it was completely nailed? Maybe you installed a new kitchen floor and never got around to putting baseboards down. These things are very noticeable to buyers, who will either offer less for the home, or avoid it altogether after seeing dollar signs of how much it will cost to have a professional finish the job. Transforming your garage into a game room or extra bedroom may have accommodated your family, but to a buyer who wants a garage for its intended use, it may seem like a waste. While it may seem to you that another “room” adds value to your home, it actually detracts from it, as most buyers actually want a garage, or that bedroom you turned into a huge walk-in closet.

Renovations That are Out of the Mainstream

Renovating your kitchen or bath is a great idea, as these are two rooms potential buyers will give most of their attention to. However, it isn’t a good idea to turn any space in your home into one that looks futuristic or ultra-modern, as the majority of buyers will enjoy a look that is more mainstream.
