Make Sure To Avoid These Turn Offs When Selling Your Dallas-Area Home!

selling your dallas-area home

At Team Nelson, our Dallas real estate agents know that most people who are selling their home know there are certain “turn offs” that may send a potential buyer away, such as a ragged lawn or peeling paint. We want to help you make your North Texas home as attractive as possible to buyers, so we’ve gathered a few tips we think you will find useful!

Here are a few top turn offs you may not have considered:

Not everyone loves Fido like you do. Most home buyers will not want to be greeted at the door or in the driveway by a dog. Some simply are not animal lovers, or may be frightened. Take your cat, dog, or other pet away while showing your home, and remove dog/cat beds, toys, litter boxes, and other signs of a pet.

Busy or “loud” wallpaper. You may love it, but many potential buyers won’t appreciate a lot of wallpaper with bold colors or big patterns.

Dirty bathrooms. Considering the kitchen and bathrooms are the most important rooms to most buyers, be sure to scrub your bathrooms until they’re sparkling! You may think that barely noticeable ring around the tub won’t make any difference – but it will.

Unpleasant odors. When you live in a home, you become somewhat immune to the odors whether it’s pet smells, cigarette odors, or even mildew. Bad odors are the number one turn off for buyers!

A garage with no room for parking. This is a common problem; many homeowners turn their garages into an exercise room, workshop, or simply a huge closet in which to store cleaners, tools, lawnmowers, paint, and other “stuff.” Clean it out!

Dark or dimly lit rooms. A dark home can be a real turn off to many buyers. Whether your rooms are not brightly lit, windows are covered with heavy drapes, or you have used dark paneling or paint colors on the walls, lighten it up! Let the light in, use higher wattage lighting, paint the walls a light, neutral shade.

One more thing – buyers are uncomfortable when the seller hangs around for the showing, so find something to do for an hour or so. This gives the buyer the opportunity to really look your home over and feel more comfortable asking the realtor questions, making comments, etc.

Our Flower Mound realtors want to help make the home-selling process as easy as possible for those in the Dallas area who are trying to sell their homes. Selling your Dallas-area home? Need more tips or a great agent who will work to take the stress out of the equation? Give us a call today!
