Whether you’ve made the move or are about to move into a new Dallas neighborhood, acquainting yourself with the area may seem intimidating. How do you become part of it all and find your sense of place? Our Dallas real estate agents have a few simple ideas to make it easier.
Be easy to approach. Whether you’re taking a stroll through the neighborhood or enjoying tea on the front porch, put yourself in a place where the neighbors feel comfortable approaching you. When you’re out running errands, shopping, or having a picnic with the kids at a playground or park in the community, choose a place to sit that isn’t isolated. Most important of all, put your phone away and be friendly!
Be the one who approaches others in the neighborhood. This is the most difficult for some, but it really isn’t that hard. It’s easy to start up a conversation by simply asking a neighbor about a good lake for fishing or where to dine. Wave or say hello when you see your neighbors out and about if they don’t seem too busy or involved in an outdoor project.
Throw yourself into local activities. Whether it’s volunteering at the kids’ school, hosting play dates or contributing your time to a community organization, the list of things you can get involved in is endless. Work with others to pick up trash around the neighborhood, or even clear park trails where people in the community jog or walk. To become part of the neighborhood, all you need to do is ask around about organizations or volunteer opportunities. You can find lots of information online as well.
Love fresh fruits and vegetables? Go to a local farmers market. If Mexican or Italian is your favorite, make sure you visit a local restaurant every now and then. Best of all, if you’ve got a canine member or two in the family you’ll have no problem meeting new people at the dog park! Hang out locally and you’ll soon have lots of new friends and acquaintances.
Put the ideas above to work for you, and you’ll soon realize you’ve become a part of the neighborhood! All it takes is just a little effort, but it’s well worth it considering community is part of what makes life so special in the DFW area.
