Buying A Home In North Texas: Investigate Neighborhoods Before You Buy

Considering buying a home in North Texas? When you fall in love with a home, it’s easy to make an offer before you even think about investigating the neighborhood. Perhaps you have already had a private showing of a home, and think you have finally found your dream home. As trusted Flower Mound real estate agents, we want to stress the importance of investigating the neighborhood before you buy! Hopefully you will live in your new home for years, but should you decide to sell later, you want to avoid anything that may negatively affect your home’s resale value.

Frisco, Denton, Highland Village, and Flower Mound are all communities known for great neighborhoods, however depending on the area where you intend to buy, consider the following:

Check out the neighborhood after dark and on weekends. Most likely you have visited the house during daylight hours, but find out what’s going on after dark and on weekends. Is the community relatively calm and quiet in the evenings? By visiting the neighborhood at various times, you can get a real sense of what is going on (or not going on).

Read the community newspaper and blog. While not all do, some communities still have their own local newspaper. Local newspapers such as the Cross Timbers Gazette are a good source for finding out whether the community is relatively crime-free, as are online community blogs.

Chat with neighbors. Of course you don’t want to come across as intrusive or nosy, but when an opportunity presents itself, talk to neighbors. Ask about their opinion of the neighborhood, whether there have been recent break-ins, their overall feeling regarding security and safety.

Search online. The Internet is probably the best source for finding information regarding the community you are considering. Look for news articles, crime reports, blogs, even use social media to engage with others in the area. You might also want to consider “Googling” the street address!

Your home is where your family will spend most of its time, so doing some investigation of your own is a great idea to ensure your family’s safety and security. No one wants to live in a community with loud or problem neighbors or problems with vandalism!

At Team Nelson, our Flower Mound real estate agents are proud to offer homes in some of the most secure communities in North Texas. Call us today with questions regarding the community you are considering!
