Dallas Real Estate – Protect Your Roof Against Wind

Considering the inclement weather recently, including the severe storms and tornadoes devastating nearby states, our Dallas-Ft. Worth real estate agents feel it’s a good time to talk about how to protect your roof against wind when severe weather strikes.

Severe thunderstorms and tornadoes can produce devastating winds; even a non-tornado event can result in winds upwards of 60 or 70 mph. Tornadoes, as we know from the devastation in Oklahoma, can produce winds in excess of 300 mph – this is huge when it comes to your home and your roof, and much damage can result.

What can you do to prepare against wind damage? Our Flower Mound realtors have a few good tips to help you get as prepared as possible should severe weather strike again in the upcoming weeks and months.

Is your roof designed using shingles? If so, hopefully prior homeowners had materials installed which are highly rated for high wind and impact resistance. If you really aren’t certain about how the roof was installed or what materials were used, be sure that the shingles fit together properly, and are tightly nailed. You might also want to consider having a roof contractor inspect the sheathing to ensure it is as secure as possible.

Connections between the walls of your home and the roof. You may not have given it any thought, but high winds can create an updraft which could literally lift the roof off! Again, call in a professional who can inspect the seal between the walls of your home and the roof to confirm that the connection is tight, thereby reducing the chance that your roof could literally lift off. Ask about galvanized steel clips, often used in homes that are prone to be in the line of hurricanes. Many of these clips are designed to resist 110 mph-plus winds.

Hopefully the weather will remain calm (although no doubt hot) for the rest of the summer season. However, it’s good to know that when high winds are on the way, there are things you can do to protect your roof and “keep a lid on” your Flower Mound or Dallas-area home!
