North Texas Real Estate – Check For Mold In These Areas

north texas real estate

Everyone knows that mold is nasty, and can even cause illness among family members if the problem gets out of hand. The fact is, there are a few “shocking” spots where you may not expect to find mold, important if you’re selling your home or considering the purchase of a home.

No one wants this funky fungus in their home, and it can cause wheezing, coughing, and other respiratory issues according to the CDC; in fact, some studies have even suggested mold can contribute to asthma in children. So, where (other than the obvious) should you look for mold?

You may be surprised to see the growth of mold on the bottom of shampoo, conditioner, and body wash bottles that sit in the shower, or even under the cap! Disgusting, we know, but anywhere moisture is present the opportunity for this fungus to grow is there.

Other places you may not have thought to look include:

  • Under the kitchen or bathroom sinks, where it’s dark and a small leak may go undetected. The ideal environment for mold.
  • Around the washer, clothes dryer, or dishwasher. Because these appliances use water or are around moisture, mold can flourish.

The solution? Check out all of the areas in a home that are prone to moisture, including bathrooms, under all sinks, the laundry room, even other rooms if the humidity level in the home seems to be high. Once you’ve spotted mold, attack it with a vengeance using bleach or vinegar. One cup of bleach mixed in a gallon of water and wiped on the surface will do the trick – but if you can’t stand the fumes, put all-natural vinegar into a spray bottle (don’t dilute with water), spray the problem area and let it set for an hour, then go back and wipe away.

After eliminating the mold you find, you can prevent it by using a dehumidifier in the home if it’s humid, and checking for any plumbing or roof issues that may be causing water to leak into your home.
