Selling Your Home – Should You Skip The Christmas Decor?

selling your home

Deciding what to do or not do during the holidays when you have your North Texas home listed can be difficult. If you’ve ever put a home on the market in the past, you know preparing it for potential buyers isn’t an easy task. Christmas is just around the corner, and you may be wondering if you should just skip “decking the halls” this year, in light of the fact that your home is for sale. What to do?

Our Flower Mound real estate agents recommend those who are selling their homes always keep in mind that less is more. This is true of everything, from how much furniture you have in your home to the decor and personal family photos. It’s difficult for potential buyers to picture their own family in a home when it’s filled with so much stuff – especially personal family items.

You may think that because it’s the holiday season, few people will be actively looking for a home. This isn’t quite true – there are plenty of people who still search and view homes online, attend open houses, or ask for tours of homes, regardless of the season.

So, should you put out all of those fancy or sentimental decorations that light up your home during the holidays? Maybe not. Of course those lavish decorations give your home a festive feel, but just as with family photos or personal/sentimental items, it’s probably best to forego most decor when your home is for sale.

For some families, Christianity plays a big role in the Christmas holiday. You may be one who always displays religious decorations or even a nativity scene on the front lawn. When it comes to selling your home, it’s best to avoid the topic of religion – even in your everyday decor or holiday themes.

Of course if you have small children you’ll want to put up the Christmas tree and perhaps hang a few stockings on the mantle. Other than that, keep it simple. This applies not only to holiday decor but every aspect of your home. To the best of your ability make it possible for buyers to imagine their own families living in the spaces you now occupy!

At Team Nelson, our job is to help buyers and sellers make what can be an involved and stressful process as easy and streamlined as possible. For answers to all of your questions contact our Flower Mound real estate professionals today!
